NOTE: I've tried to include people who were legally adopted by one or both parents. To my knowledge, there are no informal kinship care arrangements represented on the list unless so noted. When I first made up the list, I tried separating it out, however, there are many who were adopted by a stepparent as infants, others as older children, others after a death, others after a divorce, and a surprising number either (1) discovered as adults they had been adopted by the one parent, and/or (2) were prevented by the biological parent from obtaining any information about the non-present parent. Therefore, the range of issues is so great and varied - just as it is between those of us adopted as infants and those of us adopted as older kids from foster care - that it made more sense to include everyone on the list. This way, the entire spectrum of the adoption experience is represented.
